An Apology to the Scorned or My Life without IMAP

As you may or may not have seen, I took this site down last week while I switched hosts. Now it’s back up.

An Apology to the Scorned

Believe me: I’m not one to bore you with my hosting switching tales. I get bored just thinking about it; why you would want to read about it is beyond me. However, there is one point I’d like to bring up.

I host all of my projects with Dreamhost. While they certainly have their share of mishaps, they’re easily the best I’ve seen for what I’m looking for. I have an account with them, and they give me money for referring people, which is great. However, because I got this particular domain long before Dreamhost was on the scene and also because of a stupid domain locking issue, this site was hosted elsewhere. I set up hosting with Dreamhost, but the DNS was pointing to the old host.

My email through the old host was just fine. However, I noticed that I wasn’t getting emails from certain people. It turns out that if someone who had email set up with Dreamhost emailed me, it would go to my Dreamhost email account and not my regular email. I didn’t discover this until the transfer had been completed and I set up the new email. So…

Please consider this a very sincere apology if you’ve emailed me (especially from a Dreamhost account) within the last year and a half and haven’t received a reply.

I feel terrible about it. The good news is that I don’t plan on switching hosts for a good long while, so it shan’t happen again.

In other news…

My Life without IMAP…

…sucked. Life with it is better.

Well I like reading about it! ;)

I think this is a good 'testing' time. Dreamhost have indeed had their fair share of mishaps, and now it's time to see if they're going to counteract the bad press they've been getting recently. I'm still amazed at how lightly Media Temple get off the hook - my experience with them has been pretty dire since the (gs) switch.

Are you on a shared server plan, by the way?

We need to continue this via IM tonight! :)

So that's why you never replied to all those chain emails I sent you. Oh well, let the forwarding commence!

actually you turned me onto dreamhost and ipowerweb. i was on both for a bit, but finally stayed with dreamhost. i agree, there are some issues, with them, but on the flipside, they also have so many options compared to so many other hosts out there. and yes, imap is faaaaaaaaaaaaar superior to pop3.
