Mozilla Makeover

I just finished up my last project before leaving for this year’s pilgrimage to SXSW. I gotta say: it couldn’t have gone any better. What’s the project, you ask? Well, it’s a redesign for the Mozilla project.

One of Happy Cog’s new clients, the Mozilla Foundation has engaged us to redesign Mozilla.org. This process is a unique one; for the first time, we employing a design by community scenario, where our designs are open to the scrutiny of the public.

We've also launched a little site called RedesignMozilla.org where you can add your comments or just follow along with our design process. Mosey on over there and have a look at our initial stabs! Do you have a favorite?

Feel free to ask me any question you have about the process here to get my personal perspective, or tell us about the success—or failure—or any of the designs on the site itself. Oh, and if you see me (or any of the Happy Cog crew) in Austin, you’re more than welcome to share your thoughts with us in person. Thanks, and enjoy!

The Mozilla pre-launch site is really nice.

When Drupal announced they were redesiging their community site and were opening up the process it was something I thought was great. I'm really happy to hear the Happy Cog is taking the same approach.

Best of luck.

Great idea by the Happy Cog team to open up the design process for the Mozilla project.

I think this will be a great learning experience for the Web design community in the same vein as Mark Boulton's redesign of the Drupal site was.

How often does Happy Cog or you yourself design multiple iterations for a single site? Or have you designed multiple iterations because you want the community to chip in about each? And are these Photoshop comps or did you wireframe in HTML/CSS then take a screengrab?

Thanks for opening this up. Have fun in Austin, wish I could make it.

It varies from project to project. For the Mozilla redesign, we specified doing 3 different options for the first round. From there, based on the interpreted community feedback as well as consolidation from the Mozilla team, we’ll choose one to move ahead with and revise that up to 2 more times.

And are these Photoshop comps or did you wireframe in HTML/CSS then take a screengrab?

These are Photoshop comps that we cut into a browser-friendly version.
